History-making Salthill Knocknacarra Ladies Football Champions honoured with Mayoral Reception in Galway

Mayoral Reception was held to honour Salthill Knocknacarra Ladies Football Team, the All-Ireland Junior Ladies Football Champions.

The history-making Champions were hosted to a dinner at Ardilaun Hotel Galway, on Monday 17 April by Mayor of Galway, Clodagh Higgins to honour their achievements.

Salthill Knocknacarra Ladies Football team got their historic victory for the club in December 2022 match against Naomh Abán of Cork, winning their first All-Ireland football final.

Mayor Clodagh Higgins expressed her joy on the win, adding that it was significant for girls to excel in sports, just like boys.

She also commended the hard work of the team captain and manager, while encouraging them not to rest on their laurels.

The team captain Ailbhe Finnerty said the win was a delight, and so good of the Mayor to honour the team, bringing back beautiful memories.

The team Manager, Donal O’Connell commended the girls for keeping their eye on the ball. He also affirmed the the girls were very good.

Mayor Higgins made presentations to the team, saying Mayoral dinner was an opportunity to acknowledge the team for their fantastic achievement, and celebrate with them, their families and friends.

Other elected representatives at the event were Cllrs Niall Murphy, Alan Cheevers, Frank Fahy, John Connolly, Terry O'Flaherty, and Donal Lyons.

The Councillors commended the team's achievement and acknowledged the roles women play in various sports, saying it is important to continue such acknowledgement, while giving them necessary support.
